It’s been a contentious issue from the get-go, with some in favour and others adamantly opposed to a major development project in Skaha Lake Park.

But Thursday night the debate came to a close, with Penticton city council voting to move forward with the development.
The City of Penticton entered into an agreement with developer Trio Marine Group in August 2015 to build a waterslide park and expand the marina on municipally owned space along Skaha Lake.

The initial plan was met with a huge backlash from some residents, with many upset about development plans and others frustrated with the lack of public consultation.

The city, Trio and legal counsel went back to the drawing board and amended the initial plan, opting to remove the waterslide park all together, along with other changes.

That didn’t appease most of those opposed. Hundreds attended a public meeting on the proposed changes last week, still voicing their concerns.

Thursday was decision day and at a special meeting council voted 5-2 in favour of the new development plan.
Most people in attendance were residents who had previously voiced their opposition to the project and were unhappy with the result.
