Though exact details are unknown, Agribition CEO Chris Lane said the horse suffered a neck or spinal injury.

The horse, named 7 Rusty Rein, went down near the end of his run in the bareback event.

Veterinary and rodeo staff stabilized and moved the horse off the rodeo grounds where he was assessed by Agribition’s head veterinarian. The decision to euthanize was made by the head veterinarian soon after.

“What happened is unfortunate and it is very rare. But our experienced staff did what they were supposed to do, followed the protocol and made sure that the horse was as comfortable as possible during the ordeal,” Lane said.

Lane added that the rider was not injured.

The owner of the horse is C5 Rodeo, based out of Lac La Biche, Alta.

Rodeo coordinator with the company, Gillian Grant, said this was the first horse C5 Rodeo has had to have euthanized due to an injury during an event.

“We’re really upset. These horses are our livelihood, they mean a lot to us,” Grant said.

Grant said 7 Rusty Rein was 10 years old and was one of their best rodeo horses.
