Want to text something Edmonton-related? There will soon be an emoji for that.

EDMOjis is an Edmonton-themed emoji keyboard that is the brainchild of Sandra Sperounes and Lucas Timmons.

Sperounes said the pair got the idea in April when they realized adding the letter “D” to the word “emoji” resulted in “EDMOjis.”

“We can have an entire line of Edmonton-inspired emojis,” she said about the inspiration.

Now the pair is getting ready to launch their Edmonton emoji line, which contains emojis of the Wayne Gretzky statue, the Garneau Theatre, the High Level Bridge, the Muttart Conservatory and sad and happy faces of Mayor Don Iveson. Other ideas that are under consideration include a pothole, a fast LRT and a slow LRT.

“I just think they’re a fun distraction. There’s so much Edmonton pride that it would be nice to reflect that in our texts. We text so much,” Sperounes said.

“I think it makes it more vivid. It makes it more fun. It livens it up.”

Sperounes and Timmons set up a crowdfunding page to raise money for the design and development of the app and to finish off their prototype. The initial goal was $1,000; in three days, they have raised more than $1,500.

Sperounes said the pair is taking suggestions for future emojis and she adds that certain monetary contributions can buy someone their own personalized EDMOji.

There are currently 40 EDMOjis and the pair hopes to have 60 when they launch in mid-December.

Sperounes said the pair is focusing on Edmonton emojis for now but they are considering branching out to make specific emojis for other cities across the country.
