Former Kings County mayoral candidate faces forcible confinement charge

A former Kings County mayoral candidate has been charged with forcible confinement following an RCMP investigation.

Kings District RCMP were called to a Grand Pré residence on Highway 1 Sept. 25 after receiving a complaint, where they found a 64-year-old man in a room that had been locked from outside.

An investigation determined the victim reportedly was held against his will in the room.

The man was left in the care of a family member after being taken from the home and brought to Valley Regional Hospital for treatment.

Laurie Kendal Porter Jr., 59, was arrested later that day.

Porter ran for the county’s mayoral seat in October. He has been charged with forcible confinement and is set to appear Dec. 6 in Kentville Provincial Court. He has been released on conditions.

The former mayoral candidate came in fourth with only nine per cent of the votes against three other candidates on Oct. 15.

RCMP are continuing their investigation.
