A world-renowned sculptor is one of the designers of the warming huts set to hit The Forks early next year.
Anish Kapoor, who has famous installations in cities like New York and Jerusalem, will be contributing to the annual competition as The Forks’ invited artist.
Kapoor, best known for designing Chicago’s ‘Cloud Gate’, is bringing ‘Stackhouse’ to the frozen river in 2017: a sculpture completely made of blocks of ice.
His hut was just one of six that was unveiled Tuesday. Five others- three winning submissions from around the world and two installations received from University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Architecture and Nelson McIntyre Collegiate students- will join ‘Stackhouse’ along the frozen banks.
“The Warming Huts competition continues to gain the attention on the world stage and bring great art and architecture to Winnipeg” Paul Jordan of the Forks Renewal Corporation said.

The winning designs were chosen by a blind jury of experts in the arts and architecture world with no prior knowledge of the submissions. The three hut designs come from Nova Scotia (Ice Lantern), Rotterdam (Open Border), and Chicago (Greetings from Bubble Beach).
They will all be built along the banks of The Forks’ Red River Mutual skating trail in January.
“This year we saw close to 100 entries from all across the globe including China, Panama, Sweden and Australia,” Jordan said. “The competition attracted fantastic designs, and narrowing it down to the top three was difficult for the jury.”

The six new huts will join winning submissions from previous years that are still in good condition.
The Forks also announced Tuesday that after a brief hiatus due to this year’s warm weather, RAW:almond will be serving up food once again on the river in 2017.
