A cool design from Mexico that kept Winnipeggers cozy at The Forks annual warming hut competition has won a major international award.

World Architecture News (WAN) named the “Hybrid Hut” this year’s winner of its temporary spaces category. The hut was designed by Mexico City architectural firm, Rojkind Arquitectos.

“This is a really, really, really big deal. One, this is a team from the unlikeliest of places being recognized for designing a warming hut. Two, this is Winnipeg and The Forks being recognized on an international level,” said Forks CEO Paul Jordan.

“This truly proves that something as simple and basic as a warming hut, created in sub-zero conditions, on shoe string budgets, can amount to internationally recognized architecture.”

The “Hybrid Hut” was constructed in January, and allowed guests to climb underneath the umbrella of the wooden structure. It remained on site for the duration of winter activities at The Forks.

“We were honoured to come and design a special piece for this past year’s warming hut competition,” says Michel Rojkind, founding partner of Rojkind Arquitectos.
