WINNIPEG – Skaters and visitors to the frozen rivers at The Forks in Winnipeg this winter will once again enjoy colourful and unique designs on the ice.

The Forks announced Wednesday the winners of its design competition for the “warming huts” which have dotted the Red River Mutual Trail for six years. Some are not huts at all; a new category “art installation” was added this year to allow even more creativity.

The winners are “Recycling Words” designed by KANVA Architecture from Montreal; “The Hole Idea” designed by Weiss Architecture & Urbanism Limited from Toronto; and “This Big” designed by Tina Soil & Luca Roncoroni from Droebak Akershus, Norway.

“Over the years, we’ve pushed the envelope on the word “Warming Hut”,” Paul Jordan from the Forks Renewal Corporation says in a news release. “More and more, we’ve seen the designs resemble less of a hut and become more about attention to design and detail. The completion has become a competitive space for artists and architects to dream and see their dream into reality. And the best part is that it’s really allowed us to make high-end art and architecture accessible to everyone.”

Winnipeg’s Kelvin High School will be constructing a hut entitled “6043” with help from Red River Mutual.

The New Year will also mark the return of the pop-up restaurant on the ice of the Red River. RAW:almond held a separate competition to design the popular temporary outdoor eatery.
