New warming huts practical and artistic

Winnipeg’s river trail is getting a bold new look.

Skaters at the Forks will soon be able to take cover in five unique warming huts that will be set up next week.

The huts will replace the old skating shacks and will be part of an art and architecture exhibit on ice.

Some of the new creations include a sphere-shaped hut that will hang from the rail bridge, and a hut made of recycled aluminum.

One architect says his hut will be lit and it can hold up to 15 people.

"We have a solar panel that’s going to be the front and that’s going to power a battery so that there will be lighting at night," said Peter Hargraves of Sputnik Architecture.

The Forks says it will have extra security at night to help prevent people loitering and damaging the new huts.

"We’ve got policemen on skates and they can take a tour and it’s fun for them, and we have the Downtown watch on skates as well," said Chief Operating Officer Paul Jordan.

The project, called “The Warming Hut: An Art + Architecture Exposition on Ice” is intended to be a permanent fixture at The Forks skating trail.

The project is worth $40,000, funded by the Forks, the Winnipeg Foundation and Homecoming 2010.
