Former NHL player Marek Svatos dies at age 34

Former NHL player Marek Svatos died at the age of 34 in the Denver area on Saturday.

Svatos lived in Lone Tree with wife Diana and their two children, according to the Denver Post.

The Kosice, Slovakia native spent six seasons playing for the Colorado Avalanche.

“The entire Avalanche organization is extremely saddened by this news,” Avalanche Executive Vice President/General Manager Joe Sakic said in a statement released by the team Sunday. “Marek was a tremendous person, a talented hockey player and a great teammate. Our thoughts, prayers and our deepest sympathy to his wife, children and his entire family.”

The cause of death is not yet known.

Svatos also spent time with the Nashville Predators and Ottawa Senators over an seven-year career.

The 5-10, 180-pound winger scored 100 goals and collected 72 assists in 344 games.
