Penticton accident sends woman to hospital, driver says he fell asleep

A young woman was taken to hospital early Friday morning after an accident on Highway 97 that trapped her in a vehicle.

The Jeep she was a passenger in hit a cement barrier on Highway 97 near Airport Road in Penticton around 12:30 am.

Police said the 19-year-old woman called a friend to pick her up from a concert. However, according to police, the 23-year-old man at the wheel of the vehicle said he fell asleep.

The driver was able to get about by himself. However, the single vehicle accident left the woman trapped. Emergency responders had to remove the side of the vehicle to get her out.

She was conscious as first responders extracted her and was taken to hospital with hip and ankle injuries.

Police said they don’t believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
