Kelowna chimney fire prompts warning from fire department

Emergency crews were called to a structure fire in Kelowna just after noon on Wednesday.

Reports came in that flames were visible coming from the roof of a house in the 1000-block of Stockwell Avenue.

Austin Caldwell and his mother noticed smoke when they were leaving their nearby home, and when they drove by, saw flames shooting from the chimney of the neighbouring house.

“At least four feet (high),” Caldwell said.

When fire crews arrived, they determined there had been a chimney fire.  They checked the rest of the house to make sure it hadn’t spread to other areas.

“We found the house to be clear, but there definitely was a fire in the chimney,” Platoon Captain Tim Light said.

Light says he will advise the home owner to have the chimney checked by a professional before lighting another fire.

“This time of year people are starting to burn wood for a primary or secondary source of heat for their home.  It’s important that at least once a year, prior to starting fires, that they get the chimney looked at and cleaned out when necessary.”
