The Edmonton Valley Zoo and the Edmonton Catholic School District have been recognized for their efforts to encourage learning about animals and nature.
The zoo and school district were presented with the Eleanore Oakes Award for the 100 Voices Pre-Kindergarten program at the annual Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums conference. The award recognizes excellence in education, exhibit design, or significant contributions to the zoo and aquarium field.

The program offers an educational opportunity for pre-kindergarten children, as well as a chance to explore the zoo and learn about animal care for veterinarians, zookeepers and interpreters.
“Witnessing the children grow in their early education learning and their love for the animals has been a rewarding experience for everyone, including our staff. We are proud of this partnership with the Edmonton Catholic School District and look forward to continuing to grow together,” Edmonton Valley Zoo director Denise Prefontaine said.
The program is in its second year at the Edmonton Valley Zoo and has classes around the city, including various recreation centre and elementary schools, the John Janzen Nature Centre and the Muttart Conservatory.
