Mayor Denis Coderre has written a letter in response to the recent pit bull bylaw suspension. It was posted to the mayor of Montreal website Thursday.
Coderre explained the bylaw was put in place for the well-being and security of humans.

He said the death of Christiane Vadnais created insecurities within the population but passing the bylaw was not a rush decision.
He also said proper steps were taken even though the situation was urgent.
“Our draft bylaw went through the usual stages of the municipal process,” Coderre said.
He went on to classify pit bulls as “problematic” and said the dogs have been banned in cities around the world.

After a judge suspended the bylaw on Wednesday, Coderre said he was disappointed but believed Montreal would remain committed to banning pit bulls in the city.
“With great respect for the judge’s opinion and the court system, we believe this decision is unfounded in fact and law,” Coderre said. “Quebec’s Superior Court has already and very clearly recognized the right of cities to ban pit bull type dogs.”
The mayor said the city will consider an appeal of the suspension.
