A new park in Parkland County is more than a spot for residents to enjoy the outdoors, it’s a place that honours a local RCMP officer who lost her life in the line of duty in 2010.

Const. Chelsey Robinson died on June 21, 2010 when her cruiser collided with a truck on Highway 16 and Range Road 15.

A grand opening was held Saturday for the Constable Chelsey Robinson Park.

“It recognizes the contributions that men and women make throughout our daily lives and keeping our communities safe,” Parkland County Mayor Rod Shaigec said.

Last year, Parkland County residents submitted name recommendations for the new park, and then voted for their favorite name earlier this year.

“Dedicating this park to a member of the RCMP is very significant, and we’re very blessed to have Const. Robinson’s mother joining us as well,” Shaigec said.

“It was just overwhelming to even hear that she’d been nominated, much less that she’d won the vote for the contest for the park,” Shelley West, Robinson’s mother, said.

“My husband and I came up in the spring and took a good look around and we just thought Chelsey would have loved it here.”

Const. Chelsey Robinson Park is located on Range Road 23, south of Highway 770.
