WINNIPEG – If you thought Winnipeg Goldeyes outfielder Reggie Abercrombie was going to ride off into the sunset after winning a championship, think again. After contemplating retirement for the past two off-seasons, Abercrombie has already made the decision to play again next year.
“I’m definitely going to come back next year.” said Abercrombie.

Abercrombie, 36, was introduced to chants of “Reggie” at Wednesday’s championship celebration. It was the first championship for Abercrombie since 2013 when he was playing winter ball, but he called this one, his “best one”. He played a key role in the Goldeyes winning their third championship in club history. He hit two homers in the game five clincher while driving in seven runs. And his 20 regular season home runs was tied for second best in the American Association. It’s clear he enjoys playing in Winnipeg.
“I’m happy to be back.” Abercrombie said. “I just want to let everybody know here that I’m going to come back. My son’s going to allow me to come back because he told me the other day soccer is at the end of baseball season, so I can come back. So he’s happy, I’m happy, everyone’s happy.”

While he’ll still need a new contract, winning a championship made it a no brainer for Abercrombie to return to chase the back to back.
“It makes it kind of easier.” said Abercrombie. “The little man already gave me the OK to come back for next year, so I’m looking forward for that, and just happy to try and bring another championship back to Winnipeg.”

Pulling off the repeat though has been easier said than done. The Fort Worth Cats in 2007 were the last team to win back to back American Association titles.
“We’re gonna try.” Abercrombie said.
