Quebec provincial police are investigating the death of a baby, under the age of one, found in a parked car in Saint-Jérôme, north of Montreal.

Local police were called Wednesday to the parking lot of the Centre de la Petite Enfance Notre-Dame on des Prés Street.

Officers said the child was not under the care of the daycare at the time, and refused to confirm if the baby was registered there.

The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) took over the investigation, as is the case for any deaths involving children under the age of six.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Authorities are meeting with witnesses and the toddler’s father, but foul play is not expected.
