“This is just remarkable,” said Bruce Mundy, a fishery biologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s (NOAA) National Marine Fisheries Service said while watching a live video of the fish.

The fish belongs to the order of Ophidiiformes, but to the family of Aphyonidae. Experts say that a fish of that family has never been seen alive.

The ghost-like fish has gelatinous, scale-free skin and pale eyes.

The discovery was made by NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer, an underwater expedition to the Marianas Trench, the deepest area of the Pacific Ocean.

A similar ghost-like octopus was found off the coast of Hawaii in March by the same expedition.
