Heat warning issued for Toronto, parts of southern Ontario as temperatures soar

A heat warning is in effect for Toronto and surrounding areas, as temperatures over the next couple of days are expected to reach or exceed 31 C.

Environment Canada issued the alert just after 3 p.m. Monday and said soaring temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday will mainly affect the Golden Horseshoe area.

Heat warnings have also been issued for Pickering, Oshawa, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, York Region, Halton, Burlington, Oakville, Halton Hills, Milton, Dunnville, Caledonia, Haldimand County, Mississauga, Brampton and Hamilton.

Nighttime temperature are expected to only drop to 21 C in Toronto, which officials said would provide little relief from the heat.

Older adults, infants, young children, people with chronic illnesses, those who work outdoors, homeless people and those without access to air conditioning are most at risk during heat warnings.

Environment Canada said heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
