It’s the first week of summer, and thunderstorm season is already underway in Alberta, with the potential for more unstable weather this weekend.
The sunshine Calgarians saw Friday morning didn’t last: over the lunch hour the clouds moved in, but there were still a few areas over the city seeing breaks in the cloud as of 1 p.m. The wind was blowing in from the northeast between 10 and 20 km/h Friday afternoon and was expected to pick up between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
There is a cold front moving in, which will bring thunderstorms to central and southern Alberta Friday afternoon and evening.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the City of Calgary just after 2:30 p.m. and had ended by about 5 p.m.
“Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain,” said a release from the organization.
Friday night, Calgarians can expect light rain, which is forecasted to taper off early Saturday morning.
Environment Canada had issued severe thunderstorm watches for British Columbia and Saskatchewan as of 1 p.m.
