After the ongoing controversy over closing schools the chair of the Vancouver School Board is now calling on the provincial government to completely reexamine B.C.’s education system.
Chair Mike Lombardi says it is long overdue as it has been nearly three decades since we’ve overhauled our policies.
Lombardi is suggesting a so-called ‘Royal Commission on Education’, which hasn’t been done since 1988.
The study would determine the guidelines for the education system, such as curriculum and assessment.

The chair says that framework would set the tone for the next couple of decades.
“In this day and age, with changes rapidly advancing in terms of technology, social change, I think it’s time we take a thorough, research-look at where we might be going in the 21st century,” said Lombardi.
The list of potential schools closing in Vancouver are:
- Queen Elizabeth annex
- Champlain heights annex
- Tecumseh annex
- Mcbride annex
- Seymour elementary
