Province offers a fraction of the money needed to save Osoyoos Secondary

OSOYOOS — The provincial government is giving School District 53 more than $100,000 to help save Osoyoos Secondary from closing.

The school board recently voted to close the school, meaning about 240 students would have to be bused to Oliver next September.

Local MLA, Linda Larson, announced Tuesday that the province is giving the Okanagan-Similkameen School District $118,102 to help save Osoyoos Secondary, but it falls short of the more than $1 million deficit the school board is struggling with, however, Larsen says it’s a start.

“Between the $118,102 in money that I have announced today, and other possibilities such as using the property to generate other revenue, I believe we have a viable plan to keep Osoyoos Secondary School open,” says Larsen.

Recently, Osoyoos town council offered the school board about 350 thousand dollars a year for three years to offset the district’s $1.1 million budget deficit.  But the school board rejected the grant offer – saying it doesn’t want to create an environment where wealthier towns are able to subsidize schools.

The town of Osoyoos is also threatening legal action against the province for closing the school.
