MONTREAL – The body of a 34-year-old man was pulled from the Lachine Canal after he apparently jumped in for a swim.
Witnesses said they saw the man go into the water around 4:15 p.m. Sunday.
Police were called and divers found the body near to where he entered the water, around the intersection of Saint-Patrick and Pitt streets, at 8:30 p.m.
This is the fifth body to be pulled from the waters around Montreal.
On Friday, three bodies were discovered in the St. Lawrence River: one near the east end, another around Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, and the third in the Old Port.
On Saturday morning, a fisherman found a fourth body floating in the river near Repentigny.

Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant explained it is common for bodies to be churned up by the river at certain times of the year, but they don’t usually turn up on the same day.
Police do not believe any of the cases are linked.
