MONTREAL – Firefighters in Repentigny recovered a body from the St. Lawrence River shortly before 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning. It is the fourth body that has been pulled from the waters of the river in and around Montreal in the last 24 hours.

Daniel Thibodeau with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said a fisherman made the gruesome discovery and contacted local emergency services.

The investigation was handed over to the SQ and officer are on scene at Saint-Laurent Park in Repentigny.

According to Thibodeau, the remains have yet to be identified.

“The body was in the water for some time,” Thibodeau said. “An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.”

Meanwhile Montreal police (SPVM) were called to the scene of three separate incidents on Friday after three bodies were found in the river.

The first body was discovered at 6:40 a.m. by the Coast Guard near Pointe-aux-Trembles in the east end of the city.

Montreal police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said an autopsy will be required to identify the remains and cause of death.

It was passersby who alerted police in the other two cases.

One body was found at 11:30 a.m. near Parc Bellerive in Montreal’s Hochelaga-Maissonneuve borough and the other was found floating near the Old Port at 4:45 p.m.

Brabant said investigators believe that both cases are linked to missing persons files.

“The remains found in the Old Port could be those of a homeless man who went missing in October,” he said.

While it is common for bodies to be churned up by the river at certain times of the year, Brabant said they don’t usually turn up on the same day.

Brabant confirmed that none of the cases were related.
