WATCH ABOVE: Calgary police have laid charges in a disturbing case of sexual assault at a Calgary dayhome. Lisa MacGregor reports – May 13, 2016

The child first told his or her parents before the incident was reported to police earlier this week. Police allege the incidents happened at the dayhome between September 2013 and May 2016, which is the timeframe during which the child attended the home.

Calgary Police Staff Sgt. Melanie Oncescu said Friday police believe up to 10 children were attending the dayhome, located at 82 Royal Ridge Terrace N.W. according to a court document.

“We don’t have any information at this time that there are other victims, but it’s something we would obviously consider as our investigation continues,” she said.

The accused knows the operator of the home, who also lives at the dayhome. Police wouldn’t confirm the relationship between the two, but when asked if either had their own children in the home, Onescu said one “older child” lives there.

Police are trying to contact parents who may have had children attending the dayhome and are asking anyone with information to call 403-266-1234. The operator is not providing client information to police.

“We have identified some families that are currently attending the dayhome and our hope is by continuing to make those contacts, we identify other families,” Onescu said.

She couldn’t confirm whether the dayhome was still operating, but said she believed “it might be.”

“We’re working with the Crown to set some conditions, but at this point in time, we have not made any authoritative decision to close the dayhome.”

Jason David Mitchell, 46, is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching. He remained in custody as of Friday morning.

The age and gender of the child is not being released.

Police said Little Footprints Dayhome originally operated in the 0-100 block of Royal Birch Crescent N.W., before moving to the 0-100 block of Royal Ridge Terrace N.W. about one year ago.

Onescu said there’s nothing to suggest private dayhomes are at higher risk for such incidents compared to licensed dayhomes.
