Afeni Shakur Davis, the mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur, died in California on Monday night after reportedly suffering a heart attack.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office confirmed her passing. She was 69.

The police responded to a call from Davis’s residence in the evening and she was taken to a local hospital, where she passed away before midnight.

Davis was the subject of Shakur’s 1995 hit Dear Mama. Shakur was shot on Sept. 7, 1996 on the Las Vegas Strip by a still-unknown assailant. He died six days later in hospital.

After Shakur’s death, Davis founded the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation. She also had a hand in creating 2014’s Holler If Ya Hear Me, a Broadway musical featuring the rapper’s music.

In early 2016, Davis was involved in a legal suit with her husband of 12 years; she filed for divorce from him, and wanted to ensure that he did not receive alimony payments from her. The money would have come out of Shakur’s estate, which rakes in about $900 million per year, according to TMZ.

Davis was the CEO and founder of Amaru Entertainment, Inc., an Atlanta production company.
