SASKATOON – Forty-four hundred tonnes of sand and debris. That’s what Saskatoon street sweeping crews have already collected this spring, and they are not done yet.

Neighbourhood streets in Saskatoon will soon receive their yearly spring cleaning as the city’s residential street sweeping program will begin May 1.

“The spring sweeping blitz is focused on collecting the bulk of sand and debris left over from winter on high-traffic streets, to clean up dirt and dust so residents and visitors can enjoy the outdoors this spring,” said Trent Schmidt, the city’s acting director of public works.

Officials say pothole repairs will follow. Crews have already been working on high-traffic streets this month and have patched around 1,700 potholes.

This year’s residential effort is starting a few days earlier than in 2015.

“It’s partially the weather, it’s partially every year we’re looking at re-jigging the program, re-looking at matters and re-tooling and making sure that we have a better program each and every year, so a little bit of the weather, a little bit of hard work on our part as well,” said Schmidt.

No parking signs will be posted at least 36 hours before a street is swept. Vehicles that aren’t moved will be ticketed $100 and relocated.
