Police advise public about man who offered woman and her child rides

The recent spate of alleged assaults has raised safety concerns in a city where there were just three alleged sexual assaults by cab drivers in all of 2015. Canadian Press / File

On Saturday, April 9, a woman walking with her child in Dartmouth reported to police that she had been followed.

She told police an elderly white man in a gold-coloured car followed them in the area of Victoria and Albro Lake Roads just before 2 p.m.

She said the man asked them if they wanted a drive. The woman refused and walked away with her child.

However, that wasn’t the start of the suspicious activities.

The woman told the police she had seen the same man and vehicle multiple times throughout the previous week and a half. In those instances, he also asked her if she wanted a ride.

Police later identified and talked to the man responsible for the suspicious behaviour. They advised him that, although legal, his offers to drive the pair are unwanted.

The elderly man responded by suggesting he made the offer out of kindness. He agreed to stop the offers immediately.

The police said they cannot release the man’s identity as he has not been charged with a criminal offense.
