CALGARY – Firefighters were called to two separate fires in the city’s northeast overnight.

The first was in the community of Renfrew.

Emergency crews arrived in the 1400 block of Remington Road N.E. at around 11 p.m. to find smoke coming from the soffits at the rear of a two-storey duplex.

Four people living in the building were able to get out safely.

Firefighters located smoldering insulation in the wall that separated the two units, which they were able to extinguish.

No injuries were reported. However, both units sustained structural damage and minor smoke damage which will have to be repaired before tenants are able to return.

Firefighters were later called to a second fire at a home along Marbank Way N.E. at around 2 a.m.

A neighbour spotted the fire and alerted three residents living in the home, who were able to get out safely.

When they arrived, crews found a wooden deck engulfed in flames which were impinging on the home and extending into the attic.

Six people were evacuated from neighbouring homes as a precaution.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze. Although the home only suffered minor damage, firefighters said residents would have to relocate until repairs are completed.

Investigators said the home did have a smoke detector, but it wasn’t working.

No injuries were reported.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of both fires.
