Manitoba judge charged with impaired driving resigns

WINNIPEG — A Manitoba judge charged with impaired driving has resigned from the provincial court of Manitoba.

Judge Michel Chartier was charged by Carberry RCMP on Sunday with impaired driving and driving over .08.

A statement from Manitoba Justice Friday said Chartier has resigned.

“Public confidence in and respect for the judiciary are essential to an effective justice system,” said Ken Champagne, the chief judge. “Therefore, while the resignation of Michel Chartier from the court is regrettable, by having resigned today, he has done the honourable thing, recognizing that the charges brought against him would significantly undermine public confidence in the judiciary.”

Chartier was appointed as a provincial court judge in September 2007.

After being charged Sunday, Chartier was released on a promise to appear in a Brandon court next week.
