CALGARY – RCMP are investigating the death of a man found in an alley in Red Deer, Alta. on Wednesday.

Officers were called to the area of Nordegg Crescent at around 5 a.m. for reports of a man in distress.

Emergency crews rushed the man to hospital where he later died.

There was also a large police presence at a nearby scene in the community of Pines Wednesday afternoon.  Mounties blocked off an area around a white cube truck along Page Avenue.

“At this time, police cannot comment on whether the two [scenes] are linked… police are considering all possibilities at this time,”  Supt. Scott Tod of the Red Deer RCMP said.

While police have not called the death suspicious, neighbours and other sources told Global News they believe the victim was trying to stop someone from stealing his van and he got run over as a result.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“That was his (victim’s) van parked out back,’ Bryon Tudor, the victim’s neighbour, said. “It’s his.”

“Nobody wants to see that so it’s unsettling,” area resident Cory Cochrane said. “But it seems to be getting worse – my truck was broken into twice.”
