Motorists flouting distracted driving law

KELOWNA – Mounties in Kelowna were busy handing out tickets on the first day of Distracted Driving Month.

The enforcement campaign on March 1st at various locations in the city resulted in 31 drivers being fined $167 for using an electronic device.

“Leave your phone alone and remain focussed on the road,” says Cst. Jesse O’Donaghey in a news release. “We are well beyond the education period for the distracted driving laws. If you are stopped for using an electronic device while driving expect to pay the fine.”

Twenty-three people were fined for not wearing seat belts and 15 tickets were issued for licensing and insurance violations.

O’Donaghey says most surprising were the 64 offenses involving vehicle defects.

They include tinted windows and license plate covers as well as no plates on the front of vehicles.
