WATCH: A semi truck flipped Tuesday afternoon, spilling sulphuric acid at the intersection of Highway 16 and Highway 60 – Mar 1, 2016

A tanker truck flipped over on Highway 16 at Highway 60 Tuesday afternoon, spilling sulphuric acid.

The chemical spill forced RCMP to shut down a one-kilometre section around the intersection “for public safety.”

Police and fire crews were on scene. However, RCMP said there was no danger to the general public.

Officers said at 3:30 p.m. the chemical was reacting with moisture in the area and people were asked to stay away.

Spruce Grove/Stony Plain RCMP said officers had been diverting westbound traffic on Highway 16 at Winterburn Road until they reopened the lanes at around 6:30 p.m. Mounties said only the off ramps for Highway 60 were still being diverted. Eastbound lanes of Highway 16 remained open the entire time.

The intersection is just west of Edmonton, north of Acheson.
