Toronto subway riders had a rather unusual guest join them on the morning commute Tuesday when a raccoon was spotted on one of the southbound trains.
Toronto Transit Commission spokesperson Brad Ross confirmed to Global News the furry critter somehow hitched a ride around 8 a.m. which resulted in a four-minute delay.
“He got off the train at Spadina, wandered around the platform, then escaped into the tunnel,” said Ross.
Several riders snapped photographs and posted the images on Twitter which have since gone viral.
Ross said he can’t explain exactly how the raccoon managed to get inside the tunnel.
“TTC facilities are fenced and secure against human intrusion, but animals do sometime make their way onto TTC property.”
TTC rider Carl Fernandez said the creature made its way back onto the tracks after the train departed the station.
The Greater Toronto Area is no stranger to public transit rodents. In December, another raccoon managed to hop a ride on a GO Train near Hamilton, Ont.
The raccoon was presumed to have boarded at Toronto’s Union Station before being spotted.
Officials said they had to isolate the single train car, loaded passengers aboard the rest of the train and departed.
The animal was later safely removed by Burlington Animal Services.
