Last chance for candidates to run in Ward 12 byelection

EDMONTON- Edmontonians seeking to become the next city councillor for Ward 12 have just hours until they need to file their nomination papers.

The forms must be submitted in person at City Hall before 12 p.m. Monday.

The Ward 12 byelection is set for Feb. 22 and has been vacant ever since Amarjeet Sohi resigned from council to run as a Liberal candidate in the 2015 federal election. The Edmonton-Mill Woods MP was named Minister of Infrastructure after winning a seat in Ottawa.

According to the city clerk’s office, at least 29 people have already officially entered the race to become the next representative for the southeast ward.

The Feb. 22 vote will mark the first byelection for a city council seat since 1994 when sitting councillor Judy Bethel left after being elected as the Liberal MP for Edmonton-East.
