New trial in the works for convicted killer Leslie Greenwood

File / Global News

It’s been more than 15 years since a husband and wife were killed, execution style, at their home in Hants County, N.S.

This week, Leslie Douglas Greenwood, the man convicted in the murders of Kirk Mersereau and Nancy Christensen, will be inching closer to a new trial. Mersereau reportedly had ties to the Hells Angels.

The couple were gunned down in September of 2000. It took police a decade to lay charges against Greenwood and another man, Michael Lawrence.

A jury found Greenwood guilty in 2012, but his conviction was successfully overturned by the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal.

Greenwood is scheduled to appear in Kentville Supreme Court on Friday at 1 p.m. to deal with pre-trial motions.

The Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service has said they plan to retry the case.

A date for a new trial for Greenwood has not yet been set. He is currently facing two additional first-degree murder charges in Quebec.

A spokesperson for the Kentville court says those charges must be dealt with before Greenwood can face a retrial in Nova Scotia.
