Arrests made in first Winnipeg homicide of 2016

WINNIPEG — Two people have been arrested after a violent stabbing incident Tuesday evening that resulted in the first homicide of 2016.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the 500 block of William Avenue at approximately 6 p.m. after reports of a stabbing in the area.

Two adult females were found suffering from serious upper body injuries as a result of an apparent stabbing. Both victims were transported to hospital in critical condition where one of them died. The deceased has been identified as Cynthia Marie French, 35. The second victim has since been upgraded to stable condition.

After initial investigations it was learned that the victims returned to their home on William Avenue in the early afternoon and found the 35-year-old suspect in the deceased victim’s room. The suspect was forced from the home but returned later in the day with her sister. They then attacked the residents of the home using a knife.

One of the victims managed to get out of the home and to a payphone where she called for police. The suspects left the home by this time and found the victim at the payphone where they continued to assault her.

Vanessa Louise Nepinak, 35, was arrested at the scene and a second suspect was arrested a short time later, 31-year-old Candice Nora Nepinak. They’ve both been charged with second degree murder and attempted murder and have been detained in custody.
