ROV aides in underwater search for missing man

UPDATE: Body of missing man found in northern Saskatchewan

A remote operated underwater vehicle (ROV) continues searching the water of Lac La Ronge for a missing 36-year-old man who’s believed to have fallen through the ice.

Billy Taylor was last seen on the evening of Dec. 17, 2015, leaving Lac La Ronge on his snowmobile in northern Saskatchewan. The next day snowmobile tracks were found, leading to an area of broken ice and open water. Crews have been searching ever since.

The Canadian Search and Disaster Dogs Association from Edmonton joined the effort last week, on Dec. 31, 2015 and Jan. 1, 2016, but the dogs were unable to locate Taylor.

Now, the ROV continues searching the same area. It’s a small submarine style device that is lowered down to the bottom of the lake to locate objects through sonar.

It’s the same technology that successfully located Solomon Roberts on Otter Lake in February 2014 after a three-month search.

Those searching for Taylor have not set an end date for the search. According to Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson they’re taking it day by day and always wonder if “today is the day”.

A camp is set up on the ice where volunteers prepare warm meals for the searchers each day.

On Tuesday, searchers are out on the ice looking for Taylor. There are also people searching land on foot and by snowmobile.
