Residents in Sydney, Australia, were shocked to emerge from their homes and businesses after a tornado tore through parts of the city on Wednesday.
The severe storm responsible for the tornado produced hail and flooding. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the area looked like a “disaster zone.” Roofs were torn off business, trees were downed, and debris littered the street.
“There is obvious evidence that we have had a tornado go through Cronulla today,” Alan Sharp, a meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology was quoted as saying.

Flooding also plagued the area. A shopping mall had to be evacuated and one woman had to be taken to hospital after a section of the mall’s roof fell in.
On average Australia gets about 16 tornadoes a year.
