The ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ trailer is here to blow your mind

“We always knew they’d be back.”

Twenty years after Will Smith took on invading aliens in the original Independence Day, the first trailer for its sequel, Independence Day: Resurgence, was released over the weekend.

President Whitmore (Bill Pullman) is back sporting a grizzled beard, as is extra-terrestrial expert David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum). The main action hero role of the film has now been taken over by Liam Hemsworth, fresh off his run in the Hunger Games trilogy.

In Independence Day: Resurgence, it seems like the aliens who invaded Earth left something in the desert, and whatever it is, it’s coming to life again. A huge spaceship that covers practically the entire planet can be seen penetrating the clouds — and it makes the gigantic ships from the first movie look like Tonka Toys.
