Having a disability can present some unique challenges during times of crisis for first responders, family, friends and caregivers.

“We know that persons with disabilities can be impacted more severely by an emergency or disaster more than others.

“A minor inconvenience to most of us, like a power outage, can be much more serious for people who rely on power for mobility or medical needs,” said Chief Tom Sampson, from Calgary Emergency Management Agency.

The guide offers practical advice for dealing with an emergency or a disaster for people with a disability and also their caregivers. There is also a personal assessment included and a checklist that can help inform others about any special needs a person with a disability might have.

The Persons with Disabilities Guide can be found at calgary.ca/cema or by calling 311.
