A pediatrician’s method to soothe a crying baby goes viral

As parents know, a method to soothe a crying baby – that works – is invaluable.

That’s why when Dr. Robert Hamilton, from Pacific Ocean Pediatrics in California, posted his baby-soothing video, it went viral on YouTube.

In his 30-year practice, he’s cared for thousands of newborn children. Hamilton has perfected what he calls “the hold.”

“It’s very helpful in calming children and keeping them quiet,” Hamilton said.

In the video, Hamilton uses his technique to calm infants after they received injections.

It’s being hailed as a miracle move for parents trying to get their newborn to stop crying.

  • Fold the baby’s arms across the chest
  • Secure arms gently
  • Gently grasp diaper area
  • Rock baby up and down gently at a 45 degree angle

Hamilton warns that every movement must be gentle, no jerky movements.

“The hold” is best for a baby from two to three months of age, said Hamilton.

The method is similar to the method called “facilitated tucking by parents.” It was studied in the United States and the authors said “facilitated tucking by parents is an effective and safe pain management method.”

As for Hamilton he hopes his video helps babies and their parents.

“Hopefully this is helpful to you…my best to your family,” he said.
