Bowen Island becomes Mo-wen Island for Movember

When it comes to Movember, Bowen Island is motivated.

“It’s become a real community event,” says Glenn Cormier of the Bowen Island Pub.

“We went from our original year, 12 participants to 57 over four years.”

The community of 4,000 has become fully invested in the month-long awareness campaign for men’s health, which sees men grow moustaches throughout November.

There’s a banner overhanging the main street that says “Welcome to Mowen Island”. A large moustache attached to the BC Ferries ship that transports people to and from the mainland. And even the female employees at the Bowen Island General Store get into the act.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“I have little moustaches and they start very small, so I can beg for more money. The more money I raise, the bigger it gets,” says Nancy Lee, who now sports an impressively long fake moustache.

“It is an amazing community, and I’m so proud to be part of it.”

The Bowen Island Volunteer Fire Department has a lofty goal to raise $15,000 by the end of the month, after raising more than $7,000 in 2014.

“Bowen Island…is really up there,” says Tyler Small of Movember Foundation Canada.

“They’re around second or third [among fire stations] in Canada. And that’s stations in huge cities. We’re talking Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, and Bowen Island is competing with them.”

Just par for the course, says Lee, for such a tight-knit community.

“It’s time like this that we can get together and have fun and raise money. But all times of the year, this community bands together and helps people in need.”
