Winnipeg’s Mark Stone of the Ottawa Senators has been hit with a two game suspension for an illegal check on Saturday night.

The NHL’s department of player safety announced on Monday Stone was being suspended for an illegal check to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Landon Ferraro.

The incident happened in the second period of the Red Wings 5-3 victory and Stone was assessed a two minute minor penalty on the play for an illegal check to the head. Ferraro finished the game for the Red Wings.

Stone, 23, will forfeit over 37-thousand dollars in lost salary.  He had never been suspended or even fined previously. He’ll miss Tuesday’s game against the Montreal Canadiens and he’ll also sit out the Senators matchup against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.

Stone leads the Senators in scoring with three goals and 10 assists in his first 11 games. Stone is a former member of the midget AAA Winnipeg Thrashers and also played four seasons for the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings. The Sens selected Stone in the sixth round – 178th overall in the 2010 NHL entry draft.
