EDMONTON – Officials believe a medical incident caused a taxi driver to crash into a building at the Edmonton International Airport early Tuesday morning.
The RCMP was called to the airport at approximately 1:50 a.m. for a single vehicle collision.
Officers found a cab that had driven into the Airport Taxi feeder building. There was extensive damage to both the vehicle and the building.
The driver, a 56-year-old man, was inside the taxi in medical distress. He was the only person inside the vehicle.
RCMP officers smashed out a window to get inside the taxi and started CPR.
EIA Fire and Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene. The man was taken to hospital where he died.
Initial information taken from the taxi’s dash cam indicated the crash was the result of medical distress, said RCMP.
The family of the taxi driver has been notified. His name is not being released.
Determining the official cause of death is part of the ongoing investigation.
