Brockville officer saves senior after car sinks in river

Brockville, Ont. – A Brockville police sergeant saved a 71-year-old woman after her car sank in the St. Lawrence River this week.

Police arrived at the end of Home Street just after 11 p.m. Thursday to find a vehicle almost totally submerged in the river. The driver was still in the car, and was drawing breath in a bubble still present in the car.

Sgt. Andrew Harvie jumped into the river and used his baton to smash the car’s back window and saw only the woman’s eyes and nose still above the water.

She was then pulled to shore and given first aid, then taken to hospital. Police say driver error was the cause of the incident.
