Pierrefonds fire kills one, arson squad investigates

PIERREFONDS-ROXBORO – Montreal police are investigating after a fire started in a large apartment complex in the Pierrefonds-Roxboro borough in the West Island.

Firefighters were called to the building on Riviera Street at the corner of Riverdale Boulevard just before 2 a.m.

During their investigation, they found a 73-year-old woman in her apartment.

“She was unconscious,” explained Jean-Pierre Brabant with Montreal police.

“The woman was declared dead on site.”

Another person was transported to hospital.

About 100 people were escorted out of the building; they’ve all since returned to their apartments.

“For now, we don’t know what caused the fire,” said Brabant.

However, police suspect it was caused by a lit cigarette and no criminal activity was involved.

The file has been transferred to the arson squad.
