Built in 1990, the ship was painted white rather than the usual grey of Navy ships. The darker colour of most Navy vessels heats up the ship more, which could cause the sensitive electronic systems the ship carries to malfunction.

She was built specifically for the trials of submarine-launched missiles of the French Navy, as well as to track the launch of the civilian “Ariane” space rockets.

The Monge has a crew of 21 officers and 180 Naval and civil personnel.
