Calgary couple on track to slide their way into Olympic history

CALGARY – Calgary athletes Cristiano and Heather Paes are hoping to earn themselves an unusual spot in the record books, trying to become the first married couple to compete in the same Olympics for the same country in bobsleigh events.

As far as they know, it’d also be a first for any Olympic sport.

They’re hoping to achieve their goal at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

They’d do it representing Brazil; Cristiano grew up there, and while Heather’s originally from Ontario, after marrying Cristiano last year, she’s now on track to become a Brazilian citizen.

“I was coaching athletes from all over the world that come to train with me in Calgary,” said Cristiano. “She was one of them and we just clicked.”

Heather agreed, and added, “you never know where you’re going to meet your special someone.”

They’re holding a Brazilian-themed fundraising event for their bobsleigh team Monday Oct. 5 night in Calgary. For more information, visit the couple’s team website here, or check out their Facebook event page for the fundraiser.
