Irvine Police responded Tuesday afternoon to reports of a man “acting strangely”, according to a police report. When units arrived, they found Craig Andrew Ledbetter, 51, naked and swinging a stick aggressively while Sara Hurtado lay on the ground nearby.
“I thought I was living in a community where nothing could happen,” Rocio Fitzsimons, Hurtado’s daughter, told KCAL. “I cannot describe what I feel in the moment when I saw my mother on the ground bleeding.”

Hurtado told CBS, in Spanish, that she thought she was going to die. But while police say it’s still unclear if Ledbetter had a motive, Hurtado wasn’t his only victim.
“After assaulting the victim, Ledbetter forcibly took the victim’s dog from her,” a statement added. “The force of this act caused the dog to come loose from its collar and run from the area.”

The dog, named Dukay, was found hours later near a freeway by Animal Services.
Ledbetter was Tasered by police after ignoring their commands and acting “assaultive towards them.” He was eventually booked into the Orange County Jail for aggravated assault, elder abuse, resisting a police officer and animal cruelty.
