CALGARY – Canadian company Cineplex has announced plans to open a large entertainment centre in Calgary that includes everything from eateries and ping pong to a live entertainment venue.
The company describes the complex, called The Rec Room, as a social destination where visitors can dine and game.
The 50,000 square foot building will be constructed in Deerfoot City (formerly Deerfoot Mall), and will include a gaming center, a large bar, restaurants and an auditorium for live comedy shows or music.
“We’ve done an extensive amount of research with Canadians over the past year to identify what they were looking for in terms of entertainment and dining options,” said Pat Marshall, Vice President of Communications and Investor Relations.
“What came out loud and clear is they wanted something that was very Canadian,” Marshall said. “They wanted something that was a destination that provided a number of different entertainment options for them, and they wanted some place where they could gather and have an experience.”
The concept may sound familiar to Calgarians who remember the city’s former Cinescape location which used to occupy a portion of Eau Claire Market.
“For those Calgarians who remember Cinescape, think of that as one small aspect of what The Rec Room is going to be,” said Marshall, who indicated the venue would be ten times as large.
The Rec Room is scheduled to open in December 2016. It will be Canada’s second Rec Room location; the first is set to open in Edmonton in spring 2016.
